Rat Control in Toronto & the GTA
Fast, discreet rat removal backed by a written guarantee. Same-day service across Toronto.
Toronto consistently ranks among Canada’s most rat-infested cities — and ongoing construction, transit projects, and warmer winters are pushing more rats into homes, restaurants, and commercial buildings every year. Aptive Pest Control delivers fast, professional rat extermination across Toronto, Scarborough, North York, Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, and the wider GTA. Our licensed technicians eliminate active infestations, seal every entry point, and back the work with a written guarantee — so you don’t pay twice for the same problem.

Why Rat Sightings in Toronto Are on the Rise
Rat complaints to the City of Toronto have climbed sharply over the past five years. The combination of major construction projects (the Ontario Line, condo developments, sewer upgrades), milder winters, and dense urban food sources has displaced rat colonies from underground tunnels into homes, restaurants, and businesses across the GTA.
Once rats find shelter inside a property, they reproduce fast — a single pair can produce 60+ offspring in a year — and they cause far more structural damage than mice. They chew through drywall, soft plumbing, gas lines, electrical wiring, and even concrete to reach food and water.
At Aptive Pest Control, we’ve eliminated rat infestations in everything from Cabbagetown row houses to Scarborough warehouses to downtown food courts. Our service goes beyond traps and bait — we identify how the rats are getting in, seal those access points permanently, and document everything so you can prove the problem is solved (especially important for landlords, restaurants, and food businesses)
Norway Rats vs. Roof Rats — Which One Is in Your Property?
Identifying the species matters because each rat behaves differently, nests in different places, and requires a different treatment approach. The two species you’ll encounter in Toronto are:

Signs of a Rat Infestation
Rats are larger, smarter, and more cautious than mice — which means most homeowners notice the damage before they ever see a rat. If you spot any of the signs below, call a professional immediately. Rat infestations grow fast and rarely fix themselves.
1. Large, dark droppings — Rat droppings are 12-19 mm long (about the size of a raisin) — far bigger than mouse droppings. You’ll find them along walls, near food sources, in basements, attics, and storage areas.
2. Loud scratching, gnawing, or scurrying — Rats are heavy. You’ll hear them moving in walls, attics, ceilings, or above drop ceilings, especially at night. The sound is louder and more deliberate than mice.
3. Heavy gnaw marks — Rats chew through wood, drywall, soft plastic plumbing, electrical conduit, and even soft concrete. Look for fresh, splintered tooth marks on baseboards, doors, attic beams, and stored items.
4. Greasy rub marks along walls and pipes — Rats follow the same paths every night, and the oils in their fur leave dark, smudgy streaks along baseboards, joists, and pipe insulation. These marks are a near-certain sign of an active runway.
4. Burrows around the foundation or yard — Norway rats dig burrows 5-8 cm wide near foundations, garbage areas, decks, sheds, and compost bins. Multiple burrows = an established colony.
5. A strong, ammonia-like smell — Rat urine has a pungent, persistent odour. If you smell it in a basement, garage, attic, or commercial back-of-house area, the colony is active and close by.
6. Footprints and tail drag marks — In dusty areas (basements, attics, storage), rats leave 4-toed front-paw and 5-toed back-paw prints — often with a thin tail drag line down the middle.
7. Pet behaviour changes — Dogs and cats fixated on a wall, vent, ceiling, or appliance are usually hearing or smelling something you can’t. Trust the pet.

How Aptive Eliminates Rats — and Stops Them Coming Back
Generic traps and bait often fail because they don’t address the root cause. Our process is designed to eliminate the infestation completely and prevent rats from returning.
Step 1 — Inspection & Identification
We inspect your property inside and out, identify the rat species, locate nests, and find all entry points.
Step 2 — Custom Treatment Plan
We create a tailored plan using safe, approved methods such as bait stations and traps suited to your property.
Step 3 — Active Elimination
We eliminate the infestation, monitor activity, and handle removal of trapped rodents during follow-ups.
Step 4 — Proofing & Exclusion
We seal all entry points using durable materials to stop rats from getting back in.
Step 5 — Prevention & Follow-Up
We provide prevention tips, sanitation advice, and ongoing support to keep your property rat-free.
Are You Dealing With Rats or Mice?
Many customers call us about “rats” when they actually have mice (and vice versa). The two require very different treatment plans — using mouse traps on rats won’t work, and using rat bait on mice can be wasteful and risky. Here’s how to tell them apart:

Tough on Rats. Safe for Your Family, Pets & Wildlife.
Rat control is more chemical-intensive than most pest treatments, which is why method matters. Every Aptive technician is trained in Integrated Pest Management (IPM), and we use the lowest-toxicity, highest-effectiveness approach available — protecting your family, your pets, and non-target wildlife like birds of prey, raccoons, and squirrels.
1. Tamper-resistant, locked bait stations — anchored to the ground or wall and inaccessible to children, pets, and wildlife.
2. Health-Canada-registered products only — no grey-market rodenticides, no over-application.
3. Targeted exterior placement — bait stays outside in stations; interior is mostly snap traps and exclusion.
4. Non-toxic plans available — mechanical-only programs for daycares, vet clinics, and other sensitive sites.
5. Wildlife-conscious approach — we choose products and placements that minimize secondary poisoning risks for hawks, owls, and other predators.
